Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a computer assisted learning software package for Chinese language reading comprehension - the Dragonwise Series. The series tries to break down the reading process into several tasks each requiring a specific processing focus. The sentence clustering, and keyword selection exercises concentrate on intermediate level of processing at sentence and level, while the 'paragraph arrangement', 'topic sentence selection', 'main theme determination' exercises channel attention to top level thematic understanding. By focusing their attention on a particular level of processing the students become more aware of the strategies in reading comprehension. Immediate feedback is given to students during task performance and this can provide diagnostic information. A test version is also provided. There is a classroom version which will provide immediate information to the teacher in the form of an error analysis report for the whole class as well as for individual students. With the help of this software, the teaching of Chinese will be more effective and more interesting.
